Motorola bought the company I used to work for (Symbol Technology) back in January to big fanfare about how good this was going to be for all the Symbol employees. Shortly after the purchase was complete, Motorola announced a huge layoff (over 3,500 employees) which included me. As companies always say, “our employees are our greatest asset… because when we fire them our stock price goes up.”

Anyway, since I have some time off I figured I would run for President. I have no real qualifications other than those specified in the Constitution. But then the person currently occupying the White House has no real qualifications.

To run for president, I need a platform so here you go:

  1. Iraq – We are out on the day I take office. I have heard the claim that we can’t set a date because the terrorists will then know when we are leaving, but we didn’t set a date in Vietnam and we still managed to lose. So what will happen there? On the day I am elected, the Iraqi people will know that they have less than three months to get their house in order. Then they are on their own. It will no longer be our problem.
  2. Health Care – Health care in America is crushing the middle class. If you are rich, you can get the best health care. If you are poor, you can get care for free, although it might not be the best. If you are in the middle, you get to hope that your health insurance is good enough to keep you from losing all your savings. And since health insurance is almost always tied to employment, if you lose your job you lose your insurance. COBRA is supposed to help but COBRA is so expensive that people who are unemployed can rarely afford the cost. Health care costs are the number one cause of bankruptcy in the USA. The solution is for every American to be covered by a single payer health care insurance. It works in Canada. Nationalized health works in the UK and in France. Why does the US have a system that punishes the middle class for getting ill? Does the Fire Department make you pay to put out a fire in your house? Surely the health of Americans is important enough that medical decisions should be made by patients and doctors and not insurance companies. Why is the health care industry a profit center?
  3. Jobs – Speaking of the middle class, it is time for the government to forget trickle down and start thinking about the actual workers. Business loves competition… when it is competition for jobs. The American worker is being forced to compete for jobs with workers from China, India, and other third world nations. Imagine if a factory opened up in your town and the factory owners were made immune to American laws such as minimum wages, pollution controls, harassment of employees, etc. Imagine if the owners of this factory could have their employees arrested if they complained. Do you think the workers in the factory next door would be able to compete with this company? Of course, we don’t allow that to happen in the US, so the company has to be moved to China. As president, I would stop the outflow of jobs. How? Want to sell something to the government? Then you can’t move any jobs overseas. If you don’t do business with the government and you move jobs overseas then you are taxed HEAVILY to pay for taking care of the American workers who lost their jobs. Countries that don’t compete with the US on an even playing field must pay huge tariffs to sell their goods in the US.
  4. Energy – Why is this country so reliant on oil from overseas? We need to put solar panels on the roof of every home where it makes sense. One of my son’s doctors put solar cells on his house and although it was expensive, it eventually does pay for itself. So why not put solar cells on homes and let the homeowners continue to pay their regular electric bill as if they were still burning fossil fuels? There is an attempt to put windmills off the coast of Long Island but their are fights by people who own beach houses because they don’t want to lose their view. The laws should be made to promote the spread of renewable energy sources and not put millions of dollars in the hands of lawyers.

So vote for me because I need a job and President pays pretty well I would make a fine President.
