Island Week
| It’s island week over at Google Sightseeing and this week all the posts (or at least some or until they get bored) will be about islands. The first chosen was Pitcairn Island, familiar to anyone who has read Mutiny on the Bounty. | View Larger Map |
My recommendation is Tristan da Cunha. The Google Map picture is above. A volcanic island (but mostly quiet) with a ready source of fresh water, it has been supporting a population since the early 1800′s. I wrote a blog entry about it three years ago but since then we have this cool satellite image. There are still about 270 people on the island. I get their weekly email newsletter but quite a few weeks the newsletter contains only, “Sorry… There were no articles published during the last 7 days.”
So could you live on an island in the middle of nowhere with 300 other people? No airport. No harbor. Where it can take months to get a letter or package. I think I would go crazy in a few days.
