Let’s hear it for the new song of the week off my iPod.

The OffspringThe Offspring is a popular American punk rock band from Garden Grove, California, formed in 1984. The group’s current members are Dexter Holland (lead vocals, guitar), Noodles (lead and rhythm guitars, backing vocals), Greg K. (bass, backing vocals), and Pete Parada (drums). The group has been very successful, releasing eight studio albums selling over 40 million albums worldwide. Their album Smash is the best-selling independent label album of all time. Their most recent studio album, Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace, was released in June 2008.

Americana, the group’s fifth studio album, was released in November 1998 and has sold more than 11 million copies worldwide. The album peaked at number 2 on the Billboard 200 album chart and was later certified platinum. The song “Pretty Fly” peaked at number 53 on the US charts and is arguably The Offspring’s most successful song commercially. The song makes fun of the middle-class suburban youth who listens to rap music not because he truly loves it, but because it is trendy, makes him feel tough, and makes him think he can get all the girls. The song begins with the quasi-German nonsense phrase “Gunter glieben glauchen globen” sampled from Def Leppard’s song “Rock of Ages”. The song was parodied by “Weird Al” Yankovic as “Pretty Fly for a Rabbi”.

Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)
Gunter glieben glauchen globen
Give it to me baby. Uh-huh. Uh-huh.
Give it to me baby. Uh-huh. Uh-huh.
Give it to me baby. Uh-huh. Uh-huh.
And all the girlies say I’m pretty fly
For a white guy.
Uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, cinco, seis.

You know it’s kind of hard
Just to get along today.
Our subject isn’t cool,
But he fakes it anyway.
He may not have a clue;
And he may not have style.
But everything he lacks
Well he makes up in denial.

So don’t debate, a player straight
You know he really doesn’t get it anyway.
He’s gonna play the field, and keep it real.
For you no way, for you no way.
So if you don’t rate, just overcompensate.
At least you’ll know you can always go on Ricki Lake.
The world needs wannabe’s.
So (Hey! Hey!) do that brand new thing.

Give it to me baby. Uh-huh. Uh-huh.
Give it to me baby. Uh-huh. Uh-huh.
Give it to me baby. Uh-huh. Uh-huh.
And all the girlies say I’m pretty fly
For a white guy.

He needs some cool tunes
Not just any will suffice.
But they didn’t have Ice Cube
So he bought Vanilla Ice.
Now cruising in his Pinto,
He sees homies as he pass.
But if he looks twice
They’re gonna kick his lily ass.

So don’t debate, a player straight
You know he really doesn’t get it anyway.
He’s gonna play the field, and keep it real.
For you no way, for you no way.
So if you don’t rate, just overcompensate.
At least you’ll know you can always go on Ricki Lake.
The world loves wannabe’s.
So (Hey! Hey!) do that brand new thing

Now he’s getting a tattoo.
Yeah he’s gettin’ ink done.
He asked for a ’13′,
But they drew a ’31′.
Friends say he’s trying too hard
And he’s not quite hip.
But in his own mind
He’s the, he’s the dopest trip.

Give it to me baby. Uh-huh. Uh-huh.
Give it to me baby. Uh-huh. Uh-huh.
Give it to me baby. Uh-huh. Uh-huh.
Uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, cinco, seis.

Oh the world loves wannabe’s.
So let’s get some more wannabe’s.
And (Hey! Hey!) do that brand new thing.
