This book is a collection of short stories with the vague link of occurring in separate generations of one family. The author tries to show a history of quack medicine through the eyes of one family but really the link to the single family is vague at best and does nothing to make the stories better or make them more interesting. Each chapter is a separate story that has little or no relation to the prior story so they either stand alone or not. For the most part they do not.

The first story is a perfect example of poor writing. The main character is a doctor doing research to help his mother who has a mental illness. But the author gives the doctor some kind of seizure disorder in which he rapes and murders people when he has seizures. Contrary to the author’s beliefs People with seizure disorders are not dangerous killers. The second story has to do with a doctor (the son of the doctor in the prior story) who believes in spontaneous combustion fighting to help a man who murdered his wife. This could have been an interesting story but in the hands of this author it goes nowhere. The third story is about a developmentally disabled adult who is treated by the son of the doctor in chapter two. In this story, the author seems to be under the impression that the developmentally disabled are dangerous and will potentially attack any woman they are attracted to. And so on.

Overall, I found the stories poorly written and less than interesting. The characters were flat and unbelievable. The endings felt like a page limit had been reached more than the story had reached its logical conclusion. I would recommend that you don’t waste your time with this book.

Driving to Jones Beach

by Tom in Random Life Events

JBTowerLong Island is famous for its wonderful beaches so when Beth and her friends wanted to go to our town beach (right next door to Jones Beach) how could I say no to her request for me to pick her up. Of course, this was the 4th of July and she wanted to stay for the big fireworks show so I expected some traffic. What I didn’t expect was what I encountered.

The picture shows the traffic circle where Wantagh Parkway and Ocean Parkway meet. Coming south on Wantagh Parkway means you have to go around the traffic circle to go either east or west on Ocean Parkway. West takes you to the Meadowbrook Parkway and Long Beach. East takes you to the town beaches (where I wanted to go) and ultimately to Fire island. We live about 12 miles from the beach so it only took me about 20 minutes to get to the water tower’s traffic circle… where traffic was completely stopped. It took me 30 minutes to get around the circle and then another 30 minutes to get past the turnaround where those leaving the eastern Jones Beach parking lots had to turn around to get to the water tower. Yes, it took me one and a half hours to drive about 15 miles.

jonesbeachBy the time I got to the town beach, the gate was closed so the girls had to walk out to meet me. Then it was time for the trip back. It took about 45 minutes to get back to the water tower and onto Wantagh Parkway and then another 45 minutes to get back home because there was an accident near Merrick Road and everyone had to slow down to look. But I will admit that the ride home seemed much shorter and was a lot more fun than the ride to the beach. A 90 minute drive with six silly (but very bright) teenage girls is a lot more entertaining than a 90 minute ride by yourself. As my buddy Jeff said on Facebook, this is a memory that I will treasure.

Nightmare Of You – I Want To Be Buried In Your Backyard

by Tom in Music

Time again for the song of the week from my iPod. I’m very late as this is the song for July 4th but let’s just say that things have been very hectic around our house. This song was chosen by Beth but it has my hearty support!

Nightmare Of YouNightmare Of You (NOY) is an American indie rock band from Long Island, NY (right around my neck of the woods). The group was formed in 2004 and self-published their first album in 2006. The members of the band are Brandon Reilly (vocals, guitar), Joseph McCaffrey (guitar), Michael Fleischmann (drums), and Brandon Meyer (bass).

NOY has been unable to get that breakthrough success but have been very popular on tours in the US and the UK. The group is very talented, their songs are very catchy, and they have even been featured on MTV and Fuse but the group hasn’t been able to find that one big song to bring them over the top. They have a new album coming out in one month so maybe their time has come. Beth and I saw them two years ago performing here on Long Island and Beth got a chance to talk to Brandon Reilly and I got to talk to his mother and grandmother!

“I Want To Be Buried In Your Backyard” is one of three singles that came from their first album. The song has been their most popular so far. The video received a decent amount of play on Fuse.

I Want To Be Buried In Your Backyard
The streets are all violent
with murderous excitement
The hunter and the prey are dancing everyday
That waltzing jibberish
where intake becomes outlandish
I’m in a bad way every passing day

“So where do we go from here” I’ll say
you’re a shining star, you’d do great in L.A.
and I keep fixing every habit that I break

Oh Megan, is this thing of ours still on?
for I haven’t slept a wink since you have been gone
Now I want to be buried in your backyard
and when the flowers grow
just know you’re still in my heart
You’re still in my heart

A flash of dark interest steers us into this car crash
uniting our remains, a fiery hurray …ay ay ay
Our hands touch unnoticed
pressed up against melting glass
You’re calling out my name as the air escapes

Oh “Where do we go from here” I’ll say
you’re a shining star, you’d do great in L.A.
and I keep fixing every habit that I break

Oh Megan, is this thing of ours still on?
For I haven’t slept a wink since you have been gone
Now I want to be buried in your backyard
and when the flowers grow
just know you’re still in my heart

Oww..

“Where do we go from here” I’ll say
you’re a shining star, you’d do great in L.A.
and I keep fixing every habit that I break

Woo..

Oh Megan, is this thing of ours still on?
For I haven’t slept a wink since you have been gone
Now I want to be buried in your backyard
and when the flowers grow
just know you’re still in my heart

When the flowers grow
just know you’re in my heart

When the flowers grow
just know you’re still in my heart…

The Doorman

by Tom in Random Life Events

Beth stayed over with one her friends last night. Do you still call it a sleepover when they are 16? Anyway, Michel had an early doctor appointment so Beth had to come home to hang with Mikey. She sent me a text asking for an 8:30 pickup so I ran out and got her leaving Mikey with mommy and nana. When we got back home, Beth asked me if I thought Mikey would open the door for her. So rather than wait for me, my old bones, and the key to get to the front door, Beth ran up and knocked. Sure enough, the front door opened almost immediately and who should be standing there but Mikey, our naked doorman. I’m just glad it wasn’t the Avon lady who knocked. Which reminds me, does anyone know if there are group homes in nudist colonies?

P.S. You’ll please pardon me for not putting up a picture.
