And the difference is…

by Tom in In The News, Politics

I stole this from Glenn Greenwald because it is too funny.

A thuggish dictator crushing democracy — Washington Post, February 16, 2009
Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez won a referendum Sunday to eliminate term limits, paving the way for him to rule far into the 21st century to carry out his socialist transformation of this oil-rich country.

A stalwart reformer devoted to democratic values — CSM, September 2, 2009
Colombian lawmakers voted Tuesday to call a referendum on whether conservative President Álvaro Uribe – a key US ally in a region now dominated by leftist leaders – should be allowed to seek a third straight term in office. . . .But the vote, which has been dogged by allegations of irregularities, has angered critics and even some of Uribe’s staunchest allies. They worry that if Uribe wins a third term, it could endanger Colombian democracy in the same way that many of the region’s leftist leaders have done in recent years.

Democracy in action — Bloomberg, last year
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he would seek re-election next year and is working with the City Council to amend a 15-year-old law limiting elected officials to two terms, as the Wall Street slump imperils the city’s economy. . . .Bloomberg, the billionaire founder and majority owner of Bloomberg News parent Bloomberg LP, ran for mayor in 2001 and 2005 as a Republican, after having been a lifelong Democrat, spending about $158 million on both races combined.

Sparta – Taking Back Control

by Tom in Music

It’s Friday and time for a song of the week from my iPod. This is another of the groups that Beth put on my iPod. This is also the 1,000th entry in my blog!

Sparta - Taking Back ControlSparta is an alternative rock band from El Paso, Texas. The group was formed in 2001 and broke up in 2008. The band members were Jim Ward (vocalist/guitarist), Tony Hajjar (drummer), Keeley Davis (guitarist), and Matt Miller(bass). Other than Miller, the band was a reformation of the group At the Drive-In which had broken up in 2001. Before Sparta broke up, they toured extensively with Pearl Jam, My Chemical Romance, and Taking Back Sunday and appeared in Lollapalooza in 2006.

The group had released three albums, none of which cracked the Billboard top 50. Their final album, Threes, had limited commercial success but received generally good reviews. The song, Taking Back Control, was the most successful single from the album peaking at #25 on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart. It was featured in the video game Madden NFL 07.

Taking Back Control
This home, this place
It turns back on time and space
We hope, you pray
But today is still today
Oh we ran ourselves ragged
All these broken backs, tragic
We try, you fail

Another Mark you left in Hell
This cut, will run
But the guilt has just begun
Oh we ran ourselves ragged
All these broken backs, tragic

All these words conciet (Oh!)
All these wasted seeds (Oh!)
Don’t let it go
We’re taking back control (Oh!)
The future needs (Oh!)
All these wasted seeds (Oh!)
Don’t let it go
We’re taking back control

This hole you tore
Left blood on every door
We hope, you find
Tragedy will change your mind
Oh we ran ourselves ragged
All these broken backs, tragic

The future bleeds (Oh!)
All these wasted seeds (Oh!)
Don’t let it go
We’re taking back control
The future needs (Oh!)
All these wasted seeds (Oh!)
Don’t let it go
We’re taking back control

Taking back control

(Oh!) The future bleeds
(Oh!) All these wasted seeds
(Oh!) Don’t let it go
We’re taking back control

The future needs (Oh!)
All these wasted seeds (Oh!)
Don’t let it go
We’re taking back control

The GOP Is Crazy

by Tom in Politics

There is simply no other way to say it. On September 12th, right-wing Republicans were in Washington, DC to protest government spending. They demand that the government spend less and let the free market pick up the difference. So how do they react? Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas sent a note to the Washington, DC Metro (the DC subway system) to complain that they didn’t spend more money to run more subway cars to handle the additional passengers and because of that many people had to use the free market system, namely cabs, to get around the city. Is this utter insanity? Government spending should be increased to help people get around the city in order to protest against government spending? Shouldn’t they be demanding that the Metro NOT spend any additional money since they are there protesting that the government is spending too much money? The complaint seems to be that any spending that isn’t good for me is bad. But if the government spends money that directly helps me then it is OK and the government should spend more and more. The sound you are hearing is me banging my head on my desk.

Mikey Losing Weight

by Tom in Down Syndrome, Random Life Events

Since May, Mikey has been losing weight like crazy. The little guy was never heavy but he has lost 17 lbs. (down to 70 lbs) so now he is like a stick figure. We have been going nuts trying to figure out why this is happening. We took him off the Risdperdal which increases appetite towards the end of the Spring, but losing so much weight so quickly didn’t seem right. Blood tests seemed to point to Celiac disease so we are off to a GI specialist. He does a biopsy and reports that Mikey’s stomach looked irritated but, no, it doesn’t look like Celiac even though the intestinal lining does look a little flattened. So what is it, we ask. Not sure… maybe more tests?

OK, so now Michel is getting upset and losing patience so she starts looking into a feeding program and the hell with this GI doctor. But first maybe it’s Mikey’s teeth? Maybe they hurt so he doesn’t want to eat? Off to Dr. Charlie, the dentist, who reports that Mikey’s teeth are fine but Mikey looks terrible. His skin is translucent, his hair is thin, and he seems to have no energy. Dr. Charlie says, “Take him to the ER for fluids. The little guy looks dehydrated.” So it’s off to the ER where “Yes, Mikey is dehydrated” so Mikey gets an IV and some blood tests. The blood tests show his Depakote levels are too high (Depakote can cause stomach irritation) and his thyroid levels are too low (low thyroid can cause loss of appetite).

So they send Mikey home and say less Depakote and more Synthroid. And maybe he should have a little Risperdal (or something else) to increase that appetite. Mikey gets up today and seems better. He eats every Fruit Loop he can lay his hands on and has a big glass of milk too. So now the question is, will it last? Will the medication changes help?

More info to follow when we have more to report.

Dee Dee Day

by Tom in Music

Dee Dee RamoneToday is Dee Dee Ramone’s birthday. If he hadn’t died of a heroin overdose in 2002, he would be 58 years old. Dee Dee played the bass and was the Ramone who wrote most of the group’s well known songs. Joey did most of the singing because Dee Dee couldn’t play bass and sing at the same time.

Rise Against – Ready To Fall

by Tom in Music

It’s Friday and time for a song of the week from my iPod. This is another of the groups that Beth put on my iPod.

Rise Against - Ready To FallRise Against is a punk rock band from Chicago. The group was formed in 1999 and consists of Tim McIlrath (vocals, guitar), Joe Principe (bass guitar), Brandon Barnes (drums), and Zach Blair (guitar). Other than Barnes, all members of the group are vegan and practice straight edge (no drugs, alcohol, or tobacco). The members of the group are active supporters of PETA. In 2009, the band was voted Best Animal-Friendly Band by PETA. The group has been vocal about supporting left-wing causes and supported Barack Obama during the 2008 presidential election. A bulletin released by the group after Obama was sworn in said, “Few things are more exciting than watching Bush finally release America as his eight year hostage.”

The groups most recent albums have all gone gold with their last two going platinum in Canada. Their last album, Appeal to Reason reached #3 on Billboard’s US chart. The album The Sufferer & the Witness, released in 2006, was the group’s first album to crack the top of the Billboard charts, reaching #10. The first single from the album, “Ready To Fall” is about pollution and its effect on the environment, the benefits of veganism, and the cruelty animals suffer from the factory meat industry.

Ready To Fall
Hold on slow down
Again from the top now and tell me everything.
I know I’ve been gone for
What seems like forever
But I’m here now waiting
To convince you that I’m not
A ghost or a stranger
But closer than you think
She said just go on to what you
Pretend is your life but
Please don’t die on me

Wings won’t take me
Heights don’t phase me
So take a step
But don’t look down, take a step

Now I’m standing on a rooftop ready to fall (ready to fall)
I think I’m at the edge now but I could be wrong
I’m standing on a rooftop ready to fall

Perpetual motion the image wont focus
A blur is all that’s seen
But here in this moment like the eye of the storm
It all came clear to me
I found a shoulder to lean on
An infallible reason to live all by itself
I took one last look from the heights that I once loved
And then I ran like hell

Wings won’t take me
Heights don’t phase me
So take a step
But don’t look down take a step

Now I’m standing on a rooftop ready to fall (ready to fall)
I think I’m at the edge now but I could be wrong
I’m standing on a rooftop ready to fall

I count the times that I’ve been sorry (I know I know)
Now my compassion slowly drowns (I know I know)
If there’s a time these walls could guard you (I know I know)
Then let that time be right now

Now I’m standing on a rooftop
Now I’m standing on a rooftop ready to fall (ready to fall)
I’m standing on a rooftop ready to fall
I think I’m at the edge now but I could be wrong
I’m standing on a rooftop ready to fall
Now I’m standing on a rooftop (ready to fall)
Now I’m standing on a rooftop (ready to fall)
Now I’m standing on a rooftop (ready to fall)
Now I’m standing on a rooftop ready to fall
