Green Day – Holiday

by Tom in Music

This week Mikey gets to pick the song of the week. Although this wouldn’t be his number one choice (you may get that in the future), this is a song that he really likes.

Green Day - HolidayGreen Day is an extremely successful American rock trio formed in Berkeley, California in 1987. The band consists of Billie Joe Armstrong (vocals, guitar), Mike Dirnt (bass guitar, vocals), and Tré Cool (drums, percussion). Armstrong and Dirnt had been friends since middle school and became interested in punk music after hearing the Sex Pistols. Tré Cool joined the band in 1990 when the original drummer, John Kiffmeyer, left the group to go to college. Apparently he left on bad terms as Armstrong and Dirnt only found out he left from another source.

In 1994 the group achieved huge success with their album Dookie which included three number one singles. Subsequent albums which had a change in music style were less successful and the groups popularity dropped. But in 2004, the group released their album American Idiot which reached number one on every rock chart and went multiple platinum everywhere and included five hit singles. Holiday, the prelude song to Boulevard of Broken Dreams, was released in 2005 and although it was not as big a hit as Boulevard… it still reached number one on the Alternative and Modern RockBillboard charts. Armstrong says that the song is not anti-American but anti-war and is a “big fuck you to all the politicans”. The group’s most recent album, 21st Century Breakdown was released in May of this year and reached number one on most charts.

Holiday
Say, hey!
Hear the sound of the falling rain
Coming down like an Armageddon flame (Hey!)
The shame
The ones who died without a name

Hear the dogs howling out of key
To a hymn called “Faith and Misery” (Hey!)
And bleed, the company lost the war today

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
On holiday

Hear the drum pounding out of time
Another protester has crossed the line (Hey!)
To find, the money’s on the other side

Can I get another Amen? (Amen!)
There’s a flag wrapped around a score of men (Hey!)
A gag, a plastic bag on a monument

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
On holiday

Hey! Say, hey!
Three, four

The representative from California has the floor

Sieg Heil to the president Gasman
Bombs away is your punishment
Pulverize the Eiffel towers
Who criticize your government
Bang bang goes the broken glass and
Kill all the fags that don’t agree
Trials by fire, setting fire
Is not a way that’s meant for me
Just cause, just cause, because we’re outlaws yeah!

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives

This is our lives on holiday

Boston Market

by Tom in Random Stuff

Is there a Boston Market near you? The coupon below is a real Boston Market coupon that I downloaded from their website (which was very slow probably because everyone wanted this coupon). You can get a chicken meal for $1. Not $1 off but for ONE DOLLAR!!! You can print that coupon and bring it to any participating Boston market and get their chicken meal for a buck. It’s good until Sunday. Enjoy.

You can verify that this is true by going to Snopes.

A Physicist, an engineer, and a statistician

by Tom in Random Stuff

An old joke:

A physicist, an engineer, and a statistician are out hunting. Suddenly, a deer appears 50 yards away.

The physicist does some basic ballistic calculations, assuming a vacuum, lifts his rifle to a specific angle, and shoots. The bullet lands 5 yards short.

The engineer adds a fudge factor for air resistance, lifts his rifle slightly higher, and shoots. The bullet lands 5 yards long.

The statistician yells, “We got him!”

The Governator Sends a Special Message

by Tom in Politics, Random Stuff

veto message

The governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, sent a special message to a state lawmaker when he vetoed a bill that would have allowed the city of San Fransisco to get the financing they need to redevelop a former shipyard into a new neighborhood. The veto message sent to San Francisco Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, had a hidden message. Look at the first letter of each line in the body of the message.

“My goodness. What a coincidence,” said Schwarzenegger spokesman Aaron McLear. “I suppose when you do so many vetoes, something like this is bound to happen.”

So all those who think this wasn’t done on purpose, raise your hand. Anyone? Bueller?

h/t to the Associated Press.

Update: A statistician on CNN stated that the odds of this being a coincidence were somewhere around 3 trillion to one.

Trip to the DMV

by Tom in Random Life Events

dmvEveryone loves going to the DMV, right? Well, maybe not. Anyway, I had to take a run over there at lunch time and it was empty, as you can see from the photo I took. When I arrived there were only 4 people in front of me. Just a few minutes and I was up to the front where I was given my number. Yes, that was the line where you get your number based on what it is you want to do at the DMV. So I sat down and waited to be called. In spite of the place being empty, I had to wait 30 minutes to finally be called up where my information was handled and I was given a new number. This was the number for going to the cashier. Another 30 minutes and I was called up to the next person who took all my paperwork including my check and let me leave. So even though the place was empty, I was still there for over an hour. What must it be like when the office is crowded? I have to take Beth for her learner’s permit at a different office which I was told is always crowded. I’m not looking forward to it.

A Ride on the Parkway

by Tom in Random Life Events

bethpage-parkwayOnce again, Mikey wanted to go for a drive but this time the weather was much nicer. I had to pick up Beth from a sleepover so I couldn’t go for a long drive so we decided to drive the length of the Bethpage State Parkway. This Parkway is one of the least used Parkways so there is never traffic on it. It’s only two lanes and ends at a traffic circle in Bethpage Park, which you might have heard of from the US Open Golf Tournament. It was supposed to go further north but due to community opposition, the road was never extended so the right-of-way that was purchased was turned into Trail View State Park, which is one of the narrowest parks you will ever find.

Mikey enjoys the ride because there are lots of trees to look at and an occasional bicyclist or pedestrian going along the trail that runs along the Parkway. We drive down to Southern State Parkway, take a quick hop over to Bethpage State Parkway, and then head back home after a stop at McDonald’s for Mikey’s favorite lunch, a chicken nugget happy meal. Sunday we had to detour to pick up Beth from her sleepover, which apparently didn’t involve any sleeping. After getting home, she slept from 1PM Sunday until 6:30AM Monday.

You can see from the picture that the leaves are turning. Many of the trees are still green but within the next couple of weeks they should all be blazing in their colorful beauty as they prepare for their winter rest. Was that poetic enough for you? ;)

Metric – The Twist

by Tom in Music

Since I missed last week you are lucky enough to get two songs in one week! So here is the song of the week from my iPod as chosen by Beth.

Metric - The TwistMetric is a Canadian indie rock band from Toronto. The band consists of Emily Haines (vocals, synthesizer, guitar), James Shaw (guitar, theremin), Josh Winstead(bass), and Joules Scott-Key (drums). Haines, the daughter of poet Paul Haines, was born in India but raised in Ontario, Canada. Shaw was educated in classical music at Juilliard Music School in New York City and later moved to Montreal where he met Haines. In 2001, Haines and Shaw moved to Brooklyn where they met Winstead and Scott-Key (both from Texas) and formed Metric. The group received commercial notice when one of their songs was used in a commercial for Polaroid.

Metric released their first official album, Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?, in 2003 to mostly positive reviews but only limited commercial success outside of Canada. It wasn’t until their third album, Fantasies, was released earlier this year that the group started receiving notice outside of Canada. Their first recorded album, Grow Up and Blow Away, was not released until 2007. The group had felt their sound had changed over the years and the album wasn’t what their fans expected to hear so it was only released when it was bought by Last Gang Records. It is this album that this week’s song is taken from.

The Twist
We were too wasted to close the window
Friends and family looking in to my only hiding place
The rhythm of a stranger’s skin

Infidel to die for
What I am doing will happen in the morning
When the mirror won’t recognize me

He holds a certain gesture when we’re loving to ask each other
Do you want it? Do you want me?
I want it, it is you, you are where I want to be.

Who is he? (oh)
Why would I (do)
Hitch a ride? (the)
I can drive. (twist)
Who is she? (oh)
Why would I (do)
Hitch a ride (the)
When I can drive. (twist)

Somebody put me back in school, I forget everything
I used to know know how to leave the boy behind
Without having to watch him go

Infidel to die for
What I am doing will happen in the morning
When the mirror won’t recognize me

He holds a certain gesture when we’re loving to ask each other
Do you want it? Do you want me?
I want it, it is you, you are where I want to be.

Who is he? (Circumstantial) (oh)
Why would I (do)
Hitch a ride? (the)
I can drive. (twist)
Who is she? (Circumstantial) (oh)
Why would I (do)
Hitch a ride? (the)
When I can drive. (twist)

Morning Fog

by Tom in Random Life Events

Morning FogWe used to get morning fog a lot on Long Island. Being surrounded by the ocean tends to produce a lot of fog especially in the spring and fall. For some reason the amount of fog has dropped off significantly and fog is now a rare event. We did get a little bit of fog yesterday but only in the ball fields around the schools. I guess the large expanse of grass helped produce the right conditions. I spotted this while driving Beth to school around 7AM.

Maria Mena – He’s Hurting Me

by Tom in Music

I missed the song of the week for two weeks so I’m putting out one anyway, to make up for last week. This is for my Norwegian friend Solveig.

Maria Mena - He's Hurting MeMaria Mena is a pop artist from Norway. Both of her parents are artistic (her mother who is Norwegian is a playwright and her father who is Nicaraguan is a drummer). Maria is named after the lead character in West Side Story. Maria scored her first platinum single in 2002 when she was only 16 years old.

Maria has had significant success in Europe but only her 2004 album, White Turns Blue has had success in the US. Her 2005 album, Apparently Unaffected, was successful in Norway and the Netherlands and became gold in Germany. Although the album spawned several singles, the song He’s Hurting Me was not one of the singles but it is the song that Beth liked and put on my iPod.

He’s Hurting Me
I’ve never been confronted with my own thoughts
They don’t bother me when I’m alone
Can you come over save me, because he won’t stop
Now get him off his fucking throne
Caution the floor’s wet in here, been crying
I don’t know why he seems convinced I’m lying
I don’t know what he’s capable of doing
but he’s hurting me

It’s not his fault I made him lose his temper
I should know better not to talk too loud
There’s no one out there who could love me better
I’m not like you, you are too proud

Caution the floor’s wet in here been crying
I don’t know why he seems convinced I’m lying
I don’t know what he’s capable of doing
but he’s hurting me

Don’t leave me
Please believe me
Baby there is
I can explain
Please love me
Please need me.

I’ve never been confronted with my own thoughts
They don’t bother me when I’m alone
Can you come over save me, because he won’t stop
Now get him off his fucking throne.

Mikey in the Car

by Tom in Random Life Events

mikey-in-carMikey loves to go for rides in the car. He usually asks to go to McDonald’s but as soon as we are in the car he asks to go for a longer ride like down to the beach. He doesn’t want to get out of the car… he just wants to take the 45 minute round trip (with a stop for french fries and soda at the end). The weather on Saturday was cloudy and windy but it wasn’t raining so we went. As you can see, Mikey enjoyed the ride. He makes me put the Decemberists on as he really loves “The Rake Song,” a song about infanticide! Beth taught him a sign for the song so we know when that is the one he wants to hear.

This Saturday was a little different than last week. Mikey had gone to camp for the weekend and fortunately the weather was nice. We dropped him off Friday night and because of the three day weekend, we didn’t have to pick him up until Monday afternoon. I had to work on Monday (us regular working stiffs don’t get Columbus Day off) so Michel had to pick him up without me. He had a great time. They had a birthday party on Saturday for a young lady who was there for the weekend. And they did all the things that kids normally do at a camp. He got home exhausted from all the activities over the weekend. He’s scheduled to go again next month. This camp is great and it gives us all a little break.
