I missed the song of the week for two weeks so I’m putting out one anyway, to make up for last week. This is for my Norwegian friend Solveig.

Maria Mena - He's Hurting MeMaria Mena is a pop artist from Norway. Both of her parents are artistic (her mother who is Norwegian is a playwright and her father who is Nicaraguan is a drummer). Maria is named after the lead character in West Side Story. Maria scored her first platinum single in 2002 when she was only 16 years old.

Maria has had significant success in Europe but only her 2004 album, White Turns Blue has had success in the US. Her 2005 album, Apparently Unaffected, was successful in Norway and the Netherlands and became gold in Germany. Although the album spawned several singles, the song He’s Hurting Me was not one of the singles but it is the song that Beth liked and put on my iPod.

He’s Hurting Me
I’ve never been confronted with my own thoughts
They don’t bother me when I’m alone
Can you come over save me, because he won’t stop
Now get him off his fucking throne
Caution the floor’s wet in here, been crying
I don’t know why he seems convinced I’m lying
I don’t know what he’s capable of doing
but he’s hurting me

It’s not his fault I made him lose his temper
I should know better not to talk too loud
There’s no one out there who could love me better
I’m not like you, you are too proud

Caution the floor’s wet in here been crying
I don’t know why he seems convinced I’m lying
I don’t know what he’s capable of doing
but he’s hurting me

Don’t leave me
Please believe me
Baby there is
I can explain
Please love me
Please need me.

I’ve never been confronted with my own thoughts
They don’t bother me when I’m alone
Can you come over save me, because he won’t stop
Now get him off his fucking throne.
