Metric – The Twist
Since I missed last week you are lucky enough to get two songs in one week! So here is the song of the week from my iPod as chosen by Beth.
Metric is a Canadian indie rock band from Toronto. The band consists of Emily Haines (vocals, synthesizer, guitar), James Shaw (guitar, theremin), Josh Winstead(bass), and Joules Scott-Key (drums). Haines, the daughter of poet Paul Haines, was born in India but raised in Ontario, Canada. Shaw was educated in classical music at Juilliard Music School in New York City and later moved to Montreal where he met Haines. In 2001, Haines and Shaw moved to Brooklyn where they met Winstead and Scott-Key (both from Texas) and formed Metric. The group received commercial notice when one of their songs was used in a commercial for Polaroid.
Metric released their first official album, Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?, in 2003 to mostly positive reviews but only limited commercial success outside of Canada. It wasn’t until their third album, Fantasies, was released earlier this year that the group started receiving notice outside of Canada. Their first recorded album, Grow Up and Blow Away, was not released until 2007. The group had felt their sound had changed over the years and the album wasn’t what their fans expected to hear so it was only released when it was bought by Last Gang Records. It is this album that this week’s song is taken from.
The Twist
We were too wasted to close the window
Friends and family looking in to my only hiding place
The rhythm of a stranger’s skin
Infidel to die for
What I am doing will happen in the morning
When the mirror won’t recognize me
He holds a certain gesture when we’re loving to ask each other
Do you want it? Do you want me?
I want it, it is you, you are where I want to be.
Who is he? (oh)
Why would I (do)
Hitch a ride? (the)
I can drive. (twist)
Who is she? (oh)
Why would I (do)
Hitch a ride (the)
When I can drive. (twist)
Somebody put me back in school, I forget everything
I used to know know how to leave the boy behind
Without having to watch him go
Infidel to die for
What I am doing will happen in the morning
When the mirror won’t recognize me
He holds a certain gesture when we’re loving to ask each other
Do you want it? Do you want me?
I want it, it is you, you are where I want to be.
Who is he? (Circumstantial) (oh)
Why would I (do)
Hitch a ride? (the)
I can drive. (twist)
Who is she? (Circumstantial) (oh)
Why would I (do)
Hitch a ride? (the)
When I can drive. (twist)
