The Super Bowl!

The coach had put together the perfect team for the Philadelphia Eagles. The only thing that was missing was a good quarterback. He had scouted all the colleges and even the Canadian and European Leagues, but he couldn’t find a quarterback who could ensure a Super Bowl win.

Then one night while watching CNN he saw a war-zone scene in Afghanistan. In one corner of the background, he spotted a young Afghan Muslim soldier with a truly incredible arm. He threw a hand-grenade straight into a 15th story window 100 yards away. KABOOM! He threw another hand-grenade 75 yards away, right into a chimney. KA-BLOOEY! Then he threw another at a passing car going 90 mph. BULLS-EYE!

“I’ve got to get this guy!” Coach said to himself. “He has the perfect arm!”

So, he brings him to the States and teaches him the great game of football. And the Eagles go on to win the Super Bowl. The young Afghan is hailed as the great hero of football, and when the coach asks him what he wants, all the young man wants is to call his mother.

“Mom,” he says into the phone, “I just won the Super Bowl!”

“I don’t want to talk to you,” the old Muslim woman says. “You deserted us. You are not my son!”

“I don’t think you understand, Mother,” the young man pleads. “I’ve won the greatest sporting event in the world. I’m here among thousands of my adoring fans.”

“No! Let me tell you!” his mother retorts. “At this very moment, there are gunshots all around us. The neighborhood is a pile of rubble. Your two brothers were beaten within an inch of their lives last week, and I have to keep your sister in the house so she doesn’t get raped!”

The old lady pauses, and then tearfully says, “I will never forgive you for making us move to Philadelphia!

Barbara Kent And Miriam Seegar

Miriam Seegar (left) died on January 2nd this year. Barbara Kent died on October 13th. They were both 103 years old. Never heard of them? Other than child actors, they were the last silent screen stars. An era has ended.

Ms. Seegar was successful in the transition to sound movies but retired in 1933 to raise a family. She had a great-grandson by the name of Michael. He was born in 1998 and he has Down syndrome.
Ms. Kent also was able to make the transition to talkies but retired in 1935 when her popularity waned.

Angry Birds

I was trying to remember the name of this game so I went to Google and typed in “birds”. The first thing that came up on the list was “angry birds”. Apparently the angry type are more popular than just boring old birds that fly around the sky. Maybe I need to get an iPhone.

A poll done by Public Policy Polling in Mississippi asked the question, do you think interracial marriage should be legal. The results:

Yes — 40%
No — 46%
Not Sure — 14%

So only 40% of the people in Mississippi think that an interracial couple should be allowed to marry! Would it be possible to let the confederacy leave the Union?

Happy Birthday Mikey

Yesterday was Mikey’s 14th birthday! It’s hard to believe he is 14. And he is getting bigger every day. Now he can reach the hook on the screen door without any trouble! Yesterday he had to meet someone outside of school so he is celebrating his birthday at school today. Michel is sending in a big ice cream cake and goodie bags. I think we are going to wait until Beth comes home from college for the Easter holiday to celebrate at home.

But happy birthday my big boy. I love you with all my heart.

Today is the 150th anniversary of the firing on Fort Sumter that started the Civil War. Shouldn’t there be some kind of… well, not celebration, but some kind of acknowledgment of the day?

Bambi Meets Godzilla

This is the greatest movie ever made. Even my daughter agrees.

I first saw this in a theater that showed old SF movies on Saturday nights at midnight back in the 70′s. The creator of this brilliant film was Marv Newland who now runs an animation company in Canada. His latest cool idea was to take all the cells for an animated film, put them on postcards, and then mail them around the world before making a film with them.

Reason number 37 why I will never visit the Brazilian rain forest… fungus that turns you into a zombie. OK, it only works on ants but I bet they are working on humans.

In two sites in the Brazilian rain forest, researchers identified four new species of brain-controlling fungal parasites. These fungi infect carpenter ants and turn them into zombies, directing them to leave their colonies and die in places where the fungi can grow and spread. The zombifying fungus can be seen growing from the top of this dead ant’s head.

Was Ronald Reagan a Communist?

Apparently the Governor of Wisconsin thinks so. This is what Ronald Reagan said about the right to unionize and collective bargaining.
